Based on their rankings, the top 16 teams enter straight into the knockout competition. The winner of each round progress to the next round and eventually to playing the finals of Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022. 

Out of 24, eight teams prequalified from the 2018 San Francisco Rugby World Cup Sevens. The 2018 winners New Zealand are joined by South Africa, England, Argentina, France, Fiji, Australia, United States. The remaining 16 teams qualified through regional qualification. 

When the tournament kicks off, these 16 teams will go head to head and only eight teams will progress to Round 2 where they will play the pre-qualified eight teams.
